SHALL WE LIGHT?
“Shall We Light?” is an interactive curtain that communicates with users. It provides a new experience to users with a different approach toward an everyday object that can connect the inside and outside world with the source of light.

WHY CURTAIN
The idea originated from my desire to help people with depressions. From the user research, I found out that depressed people are reluctant to go outside when feeling depressed, and the lack of sunlight worsens the problem. This led me to design curtains that trigger people to let sunlight in.
STRUCTURE & TECHNOLOGY
Light sensors, distance sensors, Wi-Fi module (ESP 8266), and IFTTT were used to sense each of the different environments, and stepper motors were used to control the physical movement of the curtains.
CURTAIN COMES TO ALIVE
Sine functions were applied to control the stepper motor with higher delicacy to maximize its animated features.
WORKING PROTOTYPE
I tried to create a new language through the curtain so that it can speak to users with the form changes. Applying different lengths of time to each motors enabled the curtain to perform a variety of gestures.
GRADUATION SHOW
"Shall We Light?" was exhibited in ID KAIST building for a week for the graduation show, from Nov 16th to 23rd, 2018. For the exhibition, I built a structure to support the curtain with an aluminum profile and created a user scenario video clip to explain the concept to the visitors.
LET USER INTERACT WITH THE CURTAIN
I designed three functions particularly for the exhibition to narrate my concept and decorated the exhibition room so that the visitors can experience the interaction with the designed curtain.
